MAC Lipsticks: Ruby Woo vs Russian Red

As you lot already know, I picked up a brand new red lippy the other day at MAC and instead of going for my usual Russian Red, I instead picked up Ruby Woo. They are two very similar matte blue toned reds - so if you wanted to get one, how do they compare and which one is better?

They are both pretty much the same colour (with Russian being just a bit darker) and I can't really tell any difference between the shades when actually being worn on the lips. The real difference is the texture - while they are both matte, Ruby is a lot drier. It requires being pressed a little harder down on the lips to deposit colour; as a result the colour payoff isn't as good as Russian, which is softer and glides on easier. However I think although the dryness does take a bit away from the colour, it does really help the lipstick to wear longer.

They are both beautiful reds but my personal recommendation would be Russian. I like that it's matte but still soft enough to smooth on to the lips easily without dragging and without being too dry, while still being a long lasting lipstick. If you wanted it a to last a tad longer then a dryer lipstick such as Ruby Woo might be your option!

If you are looking for a MAC lip liner to complement your Russian Red or Ruby Woo, I find that Cherry is definitely the best shade to go for. It's pretty much an exact match and is great for both lining the lips for a flawless look or filling them in to help your colour last longer.

Whichever one you go for, this kind of red is a gorgeous shade to be rocked with style and plenty of confidence! Whatever your hair colour or skintone, it is always flattering. Team with a slick of eyeliner and some mascara and let your lips be the star of the show. How do you wear your red, or do you have another MAC fave? Leave a comment!

  1. Thank you so much for this :)
Definitely going to go for Russian Red, looks like the colour pay off is bit better, and I really don't mind having to reapply.

  5. Great info! I love Russian Red, and use it all the time. I've been considering trying Ruby Woo, but don't really see the point of that now. Money saved, thanks! :)
